Great importance for Germany as a business location
The fact that medical technology plays an important role for our economy is also shown by current industry data published in the course of MEDICA 2021 (leading international trade fair for medicine). According to the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed), the global market for medical technologies is worth around 405 billion US dollars. Germany is in second place here with a share of 9.9 percent (after the USA with 38.8 percent), ahead of Japan and China.
In 2018, experts calculated that the market will continue to grow to $595 billion in 2024. Although this development has stalled due to the Corona pandemic, BVMed CEO Dr. Marc-Pierre Möll is convinced that growth will continue or pick up again in the coming years.
Due to Corona, increased raw material and logistics costs, the profit situation of many medical technology companies is currently strained. However, it is still one of the most important job engines of our time and the number of jobs continues to rise. This can also be seen in recent statements by BVMed. 48 percent of the companies have maintained their staff during the corona crisis, 38 percent even created additional jobs.
Facts and figures on medical technology:
- More than 235,000 employees in Germany
- High proportion of medium-sized companies: 93 percent of medtech companies employ fewer than 250 people
- Innovation is a top priority: On average, medtech companies invest around 9 percent of their sales in research and development, thereby supporting medical progress.
- Internationally far ahead: Medical technology from Germany has been very successful worldwide. In 2020, the export ratio was around 65 percent, and sales were around 34 billion euros.

The outlook is very good for prospective medical technology professionals. Many qualified professionals are needed now and in the future, especially experts in engineering, medical technology, natural sciences, computer science and nursing.
